The Importance of the Tannery
When the book Nectar in a Sieve is looked at, one can see large tannery imagery. The book
focuses on life around the tannery, and how it provides not only jobs but also pain.
The tannery in Nectar in a Sieve gives out many images of the tannery, which include one
of the most important things, death and pain at the tannery.
One of the biggest parts of the book that surrounds the tannery is the death of Rukman
is son Raja. The men from the tannery bring Rajas body to Rukmani. They say to her,
They watchmen were only doing their duty, trying to justify their actions against
Rukmanis son, but Rukmani doesnt try to justify her sons actions, I understand. The
death of Raja at the tannery was just another burden on Rukmani and Nathan that added
to the number of things that adds to the tannery imagery of pain and death.
